Vegetation is often the most important component of our stormwater practices in terms of function, ecosystem services, and especially public acceptance. However, it can also be the trickiest element for design, installation, and maintenance. Our BMPs cannot be considered to be truly successful without a more strategic and rigorous approach to planting design and management. Over the years, the stormwater community has learned many lessons about landscaping BMPs, but it can be difficult to find concise information on the topic. The Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional (CBLP) program has been training and certifying a wide range of conservation and stormwater stakeholders on these topics, with courses across and beyond the Bay watershed, visiting and assessing hundreds of BMPs. This presentation will distill several key lessons learned in design and maintenance and management, and will also address the topic of workforce development related to the subject.
